A text from "your bank" says it couldn't verify your identity and your account will pause until you fix it. Here is how to read a bank verify your identity text for what it is.

The message looks like this

Why this is a scam

Your bank verified your identity the day you opened the account. It holds your ID, your SSN, and your signature on file. An institution that already knows you never needs to ask who you are by text.

The requested trio, name, birth date, and SSN, is exactly the set needed to open new accounts and loans in your name. This text isn't protecting your identity. It's shopping for it.

Note what's missing: no account number, no branch, no name of yours in the greeting. Mass texts can't personalize what they never knew.

Red flags checklist

• A bank asking for information it already has.

• The link's address is not your bank's real domain.

• The message never uses your name or any account detail.

• Threat of a paused or closed account on a deadline.

• SSN requested through a text link; no legitimate process does this.

The manipulation tactic

Bureaucratic authority. "Unable to verify" sounds like a system hiccup you must clear, so complying feels like admin, not risk.

What to do, and what not to do

• Don't tap, and never type your SSN into a page a text opened.

• Check your banking app; a real identity issue would appear there.

• Call the number on the back of your card to confirm there's no problem.

• Consider a credit freeze if you've already submitted your details.

• Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM), then delete it.
