Benefits agencies handle eligibility by mail, with review periods, forms, and appeal rights. They don't pause payments over an unanswered text, and they never verify eligibility through a link.

This scam aims at people who depend on every payment, because fear of a missed month makes the deadline feel unbearable. The page collects your Social Security number, benefit account login, and bank details; enough to redirect the very payments you were trying to protect.

The message never names your specific program or your case number. It can't; it doesn't know you.

Red flags checklist

• A termination threat by text with a 24-hour clock.

• A verification link on a non-government domain.

• No case number, program name, or personal details a real notice would have.

• Requests for your Social Security number or bank login.

• Pressure to act before you can call and check.

The manipulation tactic

Fear of loss aimed at essentials. When rent and groceries ride on a payment, a threat to it can override every instinct to verify.

What to do, and what not to do

• Don't tap the link or reply.

• Call your benefits office using the number on your official letters or card, not the text.

• Check your account through the agency's real site, typed by you.

• Real eligibility issues come with written notice and appeal rights; a text is not that.
