A DM says a celebrity you follow picked you as a giveaway winner. The celebrity giveaway DM is one of the most common scams on every platform, and it always ends with you paying to receive a prize that doesn't exist.

Why this is a scam

Real giveaways never charge winners. The moment a prize costs money to receive, the fee is the prize; yours, going to them.

The message doesn't come from the celebrity's real account. It comes from a lookalike with dots in the name and a fraction of the followers. The claim form takes your address, your card, and often your login.

The 24-hour window exists so you pay before you compare the account names.

Red flags checklist

• You "won" a contest you never entered.

• A fee to claim a prize: shipping, insurance, taxes, anything.

• The account name is close to the real one, with extra dots or numbers.

• The claim link is an outside website, not the platform.

• A deadline measured in hours.

The manipulation tactic

Excitement and scarcity. A prize with a countdown crowds out the one question that kills the scam: did I even enter this?

What to do, and what not to do

• Don't pay anything to receive any prize. Ever.

• Compare the sender with the celebrity's real account; check followers and handle.

• Don't enter card details on a claim page.

• Report the account for impersonation and block it.
