Someone shared a fundraiser link and you're wondering how to tell if a GoFundMe is real. Good instinct; fake fundraiser pages are built to ride the platform's trusted name.

Look at the link closely. Real fundraisers live on gofundme.com; this one lives on "help-campaigns.net", a lookalike domain wearing GoFundMe's name as a costume. Whatever you enter there, including your card, goes to the scammer.

"Verified fundraiser" as a text claim means nothing; verification isn't a label someone types. And the platform doesn't randomly match all donations for one day.

Some fakes do live on the real platform, using stolen photos and invented stories. The domain check filters the worst; the organizer check filters the rest.

Red flags checklist

• The link isn't exactly gofundme.com; extra words in the domain are the tell.

• "Verified" written in the post instead of shown by the platform.

• A matching offer with a same-day deadline.

• An organizer with no history, no connection to the beneficiary, or a brand-new account.

• The story's photos appear elsewhere in a reverse search.

The manipulation tactic

Borrowed trust. The scam wears a platform name you already believe in, so you check less than you would for a stranger's website.

What to do, and what not to do

• Type gofundme.com yourself and search for the fundraiser there. If it's not on the platform, it's not real.

• Read the organizer's profile; look for their connection to the person they're helping.

• Reverse-search the photos before giving.

• Never enter card details on a fundraiser link with a modified domain.

• Report fake pages to the platform so they come down fast.
