Flggd Scam School · Identity, Credit & Benefits Fraud · Lesson 4 of 12

Someone official-sounding says you must pay a fee to reinstate my identity; stop right there. Your identity cannot be suspended, and it never needs reinstating.

The message looks like this

Example of an identity reinstatement fee scam call

Why this is a scam

There is no national registry that can suspend your identity. It isn't a license or a subscription. No agency, court, or company has an "identity suspension" process, so no fee can ever fix one.

The script mixes two fears: something is wrong with your identity, and something worse happens if you hang up. Keeping you on the line is deliberate; it stops you from checking with anyone.

Payment is always by gift card, wire, or crypto. No government fee works that way.

Red flags checklist

  • Any claim that your identity is "suspended", "frozen", or "flagged for deletion".

  • A fee to fix it, payable today.

  • Payment by gift card, wire transfer, or crypto.

  • The caller wants you to stay on the line while you pay.

  • An agency name you've never heard of, like a "National Identity Registry".

The manipulation tactic

Invented authority plus captivity. A made-up institution issues a made-up penalty, and the open phone line keeps you from reality-checking it.

What to do, and what not to do

  • Hang up. Nothing escalates when you do.

  • Never pay any fee tied to your "identity".

  • If you're worried your identity was misused, check your reports free at annualcreditreport.com.

  • If someone already has your details, make a recovery plan at IdentityTheft.gov.
