Flggd Scam School · Identity, Credit & Benefits Fraud · Lesson 9 of 12

A loan pre approval text scam looks like a lifeline, especially in a tight month. The "pre-approval" is the bait; what they want is your application.

The message looks like this

Example of a loan pre-approval scam text message

Why this is a scam

No one can pre-approve a loan without knowing anything about you. Real pre-approval follows a credit check; "no credit check required" and "pre-approved" cannot both be true.

The application collects your SSN, bank login or account number, and income details. Some versions then invent an "insurance" or "processing" fee you must pay before funds arrive. The fee vanishes; the loan never existed.

Real lenders never need payment from you before lending to you. That direction of money movement is the whole tell.

Red flags checklist

  • Pre-approved for a loan you never applied for.

  • "No credit check" paired with instant approval.

  • Any upfront fee: processing, insurance, or "first payment".

  • An application asking for your bank login rather than an account number.

  • A lender you can't find registered in your state.

The manipulation tactic

Relief. For someone stretched thin, easy approval feels like rescue, and rescue is hard to question.

What to do, and what not to do

  • Don't reply or apply through the link.

  • Never pay any fee to receive a loan.

  • If you need credit, start with your own bank or a lender you can verify with your state regulator.

  • Already applied? Watch your accounts and consider a credit freeze at all three bureaus; it's free.
