Flggd Scam School · Romance & Relationship Manipulation · Lesson 2 of 20

One week in, and they are already saying I love you. When someone online says I love you too fast, the calendar itself is the clue; real bonds do not run on this schedule.

The message looks like this

Example of an online romance scam message moving too fast

Why this is a scam

Romance scams run on a timeline, not a relationship. Love by week one, talk of marriage by week three, a crisis that needs money by week six. The script moves fast because time is money; the scammer is often running dozens of chats at once.

Speed also serves a second purpose. Big declarations early create a sense of obligation. If they have offered you their whole future, saying no to a small favor later feels cruel.

There is a simple test: real people who fall fast still want to meet, video call, and introduce you to their world. Scripted love always has a reason to stay text-only.

Red flags checklist

  • "I love you" within days or a week or two of first contact.

  • Their life story arrives fast, polished, and emotional.

  • Future plans (marriage, moving, houses) before you have ever met.

  • Religious or fate language used to explain the speed.

  • The pace of love is fast, but the path to actually meeting never gets shorter.

The manipulation tactic

This is commitment pressure. Grand declarations pull you into reciprocating, and once you have said it back, the scammer treats it as a contract.

What to do, and what not to do

  • Name the speed out loud: "this is very fast". Watch how they handle it.

  • Insist on a video call before any emotional commitment; no exceptions.

  • Do not match their declarations out of politeness.

  • Never rearrange your finances or plans for someone you have not met.

  • Talk to someone you trust; say the timeline out loud and listen to yourself.
