Why this is a scam

There is no such thing as a personal "exit fee" collected at a boarding gate. Airlines do not hold passengers for cash payments, and travelers whose cards fail have banks, employers, families, and embassies before they have you.

The timing is the weapon. This message lands hours before the long-awaited visit, when you are most invested and least willing to let the reunion die over a few hundred dollars. The countdown to the flight replaces the time you would normally take to think.

Pay it, and the flight will be missed anyway. Then comes the rebooking fee, the customs fee, the luggage fee. The trip is a treadmill, and it never arrives.

Red flags checklist

• A fee you have never heard of: exit fees, boarding taxes, customs deposits.

• Their card is conveniently blocked, and only you can help in time.

• A countdown: the flight leaves in hours, the office closes soon.

• Repayment promised "the moment I land".

• Each fee you pay reveals one more fee.

The manipulation tactic

This is deadline pressure aimed at hope. You are not just losing money if you say no; you feel like you are cancelling the reunion, and the scammer counts on that.

What to do, and what not to do

• Say no to gate-side fees; they do not exist. Let the "flight" leave.

• Ask which airline and flight number, then check it yourself.

• Offer to call the airline or embassy directly; watch the story wobble.

• Never wire money or send gift card codes to unblock anyone's travel.

• Treat a missed "visit" that dies over $480 as the proof it always was.
