The "Verify Your Identity" Trap

A text asking me to verify my identity; is that ever real? Almost never, and here's how to tell when it isn't.

Why this is a scam

Real companies already know who you are. They verified you when you signed up. When a stranger texts asking you to "verify your identity", they are not checking your identity; they are collecting it.

Notice the message never names the company. That's on purpose. It's sent to millions of people, and every reader fills in the blank with a service they actually use.

The form behind the link asks for your name, date of birth, and often your Social Security number. That bundle is everything someone needs to open accounts in your name.

Red flags checklist

• No company name, just "Account Services" or "Support Team".

• A deadline: verify within 24 hours or lose access.

• The link is not the company's real website.

• It asks for your SSN, date of birth, or full card number.

• You didn't do anything that would trigger a check.

The manipulation tactic

Vagueness plus urgency. Your brain supplies the missing company name, and the deadline stops you from questioning it.

What to do, and what not to do

• Don't tap the link or reply.

• If you think a real account needs attention, log in through the app or website you already use.

• Never send your SSN or date of birth by text.

• Delete the message and forward it to 7726 (SPAM) first if you can.
