A loud page just took over your screen: viruses found, call now. If you're staring at a virus detected popup with a phone number on it, here's the short answer; it's fake.

The message looks like this

Example of a fake virus detected popup scam

Why this is a scam

Real antivirus warnings are quiet. They come from the software already on your computer, and they never show a phone number. Microsoft does not put support numbers in warning screens, and it does not know what is on your hard drive.

This popup is just a webpage. It may play alarm sounds, go full screen, and refuse to close nicely. That is stagecraft. Nothing has scanned your computer, and nothing is infected yet.

The danger starts if you call. The person who answers will ask to connect to your computer, "find" fake problems, and charge you hundreds of dollars; or worse, reach your bank.

Red flags checklist

  • A phone number in a virus warning. Real alerts never include one.

  • Alarm sounds, countdowns, or flashing full-screen warnings.

  • Claims that your passwords, photos, or banking are already exposed.

  • Instructions not to shut down or restart your computer.

  • A warning that appeared while you were just browsing the web.

The manipulation tactic

Pure fear and urgency. The noise and the countdown are designed to make you call before your common sense catches up.

What to do, and what not to do

  • Don't call the number. Ever.

  • Close the browser tab. If it won't close, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete (or Cmd+Option+Esc on Mac) and end the browser task, or restart your computer. Ignore the "do not shut down" line; that instruction protects the scam, not you.

  • If you're worried, run a scan with the antivirus already on your device.

  • Never let anyone who answers a popup number connect to your computer.
