The visa is "approved", the reunion is days away, and only one fee stands between you. When an online girlfriend or boyfriend needs money for a visa to visit, the visit is the bait and the fee is the point.

Why this is a scam

Real visa costs are paid by the applicant, at official rates, published on government websites. "Travel insurance deposits", "route fees", and "approval taxes" collected through a partner abroad are inventions.

The script is clever because it shows effort. They "saved $200 already"; you are only topping up. Partial self-funding makes the ask feel legitimate and makes you feel like a teammate rather than a target.

After the visa fee comes the ticket, then the airport fee, then the customs deposit. The trip is always one payment away, and the person was never coming.

Red flags checklist

• A visa or travel cost you are asked to cover or top up.

• Fees that do not appear on any official government fee schedule.

• They already "paid their share", and just need the rest.

• The travel date creates urgency: pay this week or lose the slot.

• Every completed payment reveals a new, unexpected cost.

The manipulation tactic

This is the teamwork illusion. By funding part of the trip themselves, the scammer turns a money request into a shared project you feel invested in finishing.

What to do, and what not to do

• Check real visa fees on the official government site of your country.

• Offer to pay the airline or embassy directly; watch the excuses arrive.

• Never send travel money by wire, gift cards, or crypto.

• Do not fund a visit for someone who has never video called you.

• If you have already paid, stop the series now; the next fee is already planned.
