Robbed in a foreign city, passport gone, and you are the only person they trust. When an online friend says their wallet was stolen and asks for money, you are hearing a script older than email.

The message looks like this

Why this is a scam

Real travelers in trouble have a support system the script must erase: banks that courier replacement cards, embassies that issue emergency documents (for far less than $700), travel insurance, employers, and family. "There is no one else" is the story's most necessary and least believable line.

The robbery also conveniently explains everything at once: no money, no ID, no way to video call, and total dependence on you. One dramatic event removes every check you could run.

Being trusted feels good. The script is engineered so that helping equals proving your bond, and doubting equals betrayal.

Red flags checklist

• A robbery abroad reported to you rather than to police, bank, or embassy.

• Everything lost in one event: cash, cards, passport, and options.

• "You are the only one I can turn to."

• Specific fees the embassy supposedly demands in cash.

• Money requested by wire, gift cards, or crypto, "just this once".

The manipulation tactic

This is exclusivity pressure. Being cast as the only rescuer makes refusal feel like abandonment, and shame ("I hate to ask") is added so you rush to relieve it.

What to do, and what not to do

• Slow down; real embassies do not evaporate in an hour.

• Ask which embassy and call its published number yourself.

• Suggest their bank, family, or insurance first; count the excuses.

• Never wire money or send codes to someone you have not met in person.

• Report the account to the platform when the story collapses.
