Why this is a scam
A person who talks to you every day but will never show their face is telling you the face does not match the photos. Video is the single cheapest way to prove identity, which is exactly why scammers cannot allow it.
The excuses are engineered to make you the problem. If you push, you are "not trusting". If you insist, you are "ruining the romance". Guilt keeps you from repeating the one request that ends the scam.
Watch for the upgrade version too: a short, blurry, pre-recorded clip, or a "call" that drops after seconds. AI face filters exist, but mostly scammers just avoid the test entirely.
Red flags checklist
Weeks of contact and not one live video call.
A new excuse each time: camera, signal, shyness, work rules.
Guilt or hurt feelings whenever you ask.
Calls that mysteriously fail, freeze, or drop within seconds.
Endless promises to call "soon" that never land on a date.
The manipulation tactic
This is avoidance wrapped in guilt. Each refusal comes packaged with a reason to feel bad for asking, so you stop asking.
What to do, and what not to do
Make a live video call a hard requirement; one call settles everything.
Do not accept photos, voice notes, or short clips as substitutes.
Notice the pattern of excuses, not the quality of each one.
Never send money or intimate images to someone who will not show their face.
If the call finally happens and feels off (lag, loops, odd blinking), trust that too.
