A text says your Apple ID has been compromised and you need to secure it now. Before you tap anything, here's how to tell an Apple ID compromised message is a fake.

Why this is a scam

Apple doesn't send texts asking you to verify your identity through a link. Real sign-in alerts appear on your own Apple devices as system notifications, and real account management happens at appleid.apple.com or in your device settings, places you go to yourself.

The link leads to a sign-in page that looks exactly like Apple's. Type your password there and the scammer owns your Apple ID: your photos, your backups, your saved cards, and often the ability to lock you out of your own phone.

The foreign city is set dressing. It makes the threat feel real and the deadline feel reasonable. Neither is true.

Red flags checklist

• A text or email link that asks you to "verify" your Apple ID.

• The web address isn't apple.com; look for extra words like "secure-portal".

• A deadline with a threat of suspension.

• A dramatic sign-in location you've never heard of.

• The message arrived out of nowhere, from a plain phone number.

The manipulation tactic

Fear of losing your digital life. Your phone holds your photos and memories, so a threat to your Apple ID lands harder than almost any other.

What to do, and what not to do

• Don't tap the link or enter your password anywhere it leads.

• Check for real alerts yourself: Settings, your name, then Sign-In & Security on your iPhone.

• If you're still unsure, go to appleid.apple.com by typing it yourself.

• Turn on two-factor authentication if you haven't.

• Delete the text and report it by forwarding to 7726 (SPAM).
