Why this is a scam

Immigration agencies communicate about status through official notices and your own online case account. Status problems are never fixed by a same-day phone payment, and officers never demand secrecy.

This scam targets people with the most to lose, and the callers know the fear is real. They borrow form numbers and legal words to sound official. The words are real; the case is not.

Anyone who can supposedly cancel your detention for a fee over the phone is describing a bribe. Real officers don't sell outcomes.

Red flags checklist

• A phone call about your status instead of a written notice or case update.

• A same-day fee to "correct" a violation.

• Payment by wire transfer, gift card, or crypto.

• Threats of detention or deportation within hours.

• Instructions to keep the call secret.

• The caller asks for details a real agency would already have.

The manipulation tactic

Fear aimed at high stakes. When family, home, and status feel threatened, urgency overrides everything; the script depends on it.

What to do, and what not to do

• Hang up; a real case will exist in writing and in your online records.

• Check your case status yourself through the official agency site you already use.

• If you have an attorney or accredited representative, call them before responding to anyone.

• Never wire money or buy gift cards to fix a "status problem".

• Don't isolate; tell someone you trust, whatever the caller said.
