A voicemail says you owe back taxes, and if you don't call back today, the IRS will take action. If you just got an IRS call saying you owe back taxes, take a breath; here is how to tell what it really is.

The message looks like this

Example of an IRS back taxes scam call voicemail

Why this is a scam

The real IRS starts with letters; plain paper ones, sent by mail, usually several of them. It does not open a case by phone, and it does not give you a same-day deadline.

The caller wants one of two things: a payment you can't reverse, or your personal details. If you call back, they will keep you on the line, walk you to a payment method, and warn you not to hang up.

Real tax problems move slowly and come with paperwork, appeal rights, and case numbers you can check yourself. Fear and speed are the giveaway here.

Red flags checklist

  • A phone call, not a letter, is the first you hear of the "debt".

  • Payment is demanded today, with arrest or liens as the threat.

  • You're told to pay by gift card, wire transfer, or crypto.

  • The caller warns you not to hang up or not to tell anyone.

  • The number they give you isn't on irs.gov.

  • They already sound angry; real agencies don't threaten on first contact.

The manipulation tactic

This scam runs on authority plus fear. When a voice claims government power and names a scary consequence, most of us obey first and think later.

What to do, and what not to do

  • Hang up, or don't call back. You owe nothing to a voicemail.

  • Check your real tax account yourself at irs.gov, or call the IRS using the number listed there.

  • Never pay a "tax debt" by gift card, wire, or crypto; no agency accepts those.

  • Don't give your Social Security number to an incoming caller.

  • If you're worried, ask a trusted person or a tax professional before doing anything.
