An offer letter arrives for a job you barely remember applying to, and nobody ever spoke to you. A job offer without an interview is one of the most reliable scam signals there is.
The message looks like this
Why this is a scam
No real company hires without talking to you. Interviews protect the employer; skipping them makes no business sense. The only employer who skips the interview is one who was never going to pay you.
The "onboarding packet" is the payload. It asks for your SSN, ID photos, and bank details, or routes you to buy equipment from a "supplier" the company will supposedly refund. That refund never comes.
Red flags checklist
An offer with no interview, no call, and no named manager.
A deadline measured in hours to accept.
Onboarding forms that want your SSN and bank login up front.
Pay noticeably above market for an entry-level remote role.
The sender's domain doesn't match any real company site.
The manipulation tactic
Reciprocity and urgency. They handed you something valuable, so you feel you should complete their forms fast, before checking whether the company is real.
What to do, and what not to do
Don't open attachments from a company you can't verify.
Look the company up independently; call the number on its real website.
Never fill in SSN or banking details to "accept" an offer.
Never buy equipment with a promise of reimbursement.
Report the email as phishing and delete it.
