Before you've met a single coworker, "onboarding" wants your whole identity in one upload. When job onboarding asks for your ID and bank details all at once, on a deadline, it's a document grab.

Why this is a scam

Real onboarding is spread out and verified: an I-9 with a named HR contact, payroll forms inside a known system, and no 12-hour countdowns. Scam onboarding is a single grab; everything an identity thief needs, collected in one step before you get suspicious.

License, Social Security card, and a bank document together are a complete identity kit. With them, accounts and loans can be opened in your name within days.

Red flags checklist

• Every sensitive document requested at once, immediately.

• A countdown tied to "locking in" your start date.

• The upload portal's domain doesn't match the company.

• No named HR person you can call back.

• The job itself came with no interview or a chat-only interview.

The manipulation tactic

Momentum. You're excited, the finish line is visible, and each upload feels like progress toward a start date that was never real.

What to do, and what not to do

• Pause at any all-at-once document request; call the company through its real, independently found number.

• Verify the portal domain matches the employer exactly.

• Never upload a Social Security card image to an unverified portal.

• If you already uploaded, freeze your credit with the bureaus today and monitor your bank.

• Report the domain to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
