You met online weeks ago. You talk about food, family, work; it's nice. But lately your online friend keeps talking about investing, always lightly, always in passing. That lightness is rehearsed.

The message looks like this

This is the opening phase of what's known as pig butchering: a long con where weeks of ordinary friendship exist to lower your guard. The investing mentions are seeds, planted casually so that one day asking to join feels like your idea.

Notice the structure of the message: warmth, a tiny brag, a mentor figure, then straight back to warmth. No pitch, no pressure. Scripts like this run for months, and they're patient because the eventual losses are life-changing; theirs to gain, yours to lose.

Red flags checklist

• A new online friend whose life includes effortless daily trading profits.

• A "method" learned from an aunt, uncle, or mentor, mentioned repeatedly.

• Investment talk woven between genuine-feeling personal conversation.

• They never ask you to invest; they wait for you to ask them.

• The friendship began with a wrong number, a random match, or an unsolicited DM.

The manipulation tactic

Trust farming. Time plus warmth builds real affection, and affection switches off the skepticism you'd show a stranger; by the time money comes up, they aren't a stranger.

What to do, and what not to do

• Never ask them about the method; that question is the trap closing.

• Keep friendship and money permanently separate with anyone you've never met.

• Reverse-search their photos; borrowed faces are standard in this scam.

• Don't be embarrassed if this fits your situation; these scripts are professional.

• Cut contact before, not after, the first "small test" investment.
