A text says you've been selected for a job you never applied for. If a job text saying you've been selected just landed out of nowhere, here's how to tell it's a scam in under a minute.

Why this is a scam

Real employers don't select people who never applied. Hiring takes applications, interviews, and paperwork; it never starts with a mass text to a stranger.

The goal is to get you to reply. Once you do, the "recruiter" asks for personal details for a background check, or a small fee for training or equipment. Your details and your money go straight to the scammer.

These texts go out to thousands of numbers at once. The high pay and low effort are the bait; the missing company details are the tell.

Red flags checklist

• You never applied for the job; the offer came to you.

• High pay for no experience and no interview.

• Pressure to act fast; "only 20 spots left."

• The link goes to a domain you've never heard of.

• You're asked to reply YES, which confirms your number is live.

The manipulation tactic

Flattery plus scarcity. Being "selected" feels good, and the shrinking spots push you to reply before you think.

What to do, and what not to do

• Don't reply, not even to say no; a reply marks your number as active.

• Search the company name yourself; real openings live on real career pages.

• Never pay for training, equipment, or onboarding. Real employers pay you.

• Never send your SSN or bank details to someone who texted first.

• Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM), then delete it.
