Compressing the decision so there is no time to check.
Urgency is the most widely used lever in fraud because it defeats the single defence that works against all of the others: stopping to check.
The deadline is always short and always artificial. The parcel will be returned today. The account closes in an hour. The offer is gone by tonight. The investigation proceeds unless it is resolved now. None of these constraints exist. They are stated because a person who has fifteen minutes will act, and a person who has a day will ask someone.
Research on scam compliance describes victims as being pushed into a "hot" emotional state, in which immediate feeling outweighs deliberation. Urgency is how that state is produced and, more importantly, sustained. The moment the pressure lifts, the reasoning returns, so a good script never lets it lift.
Urgency also explains a pattern that otherwise looks strange: the request to stay on the line. Ending a call is a pause, and a pause is the enemy. Anyone who resists you hanging up is telling you what they are protecting.
The countermeasure is not scepticism. It is delay. Almost nothing legitimate is destroyed by twenty minutes.
